In another video from onlinewelten.com, again recorded over at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Erling Ellingson addresses the Age of Conan community directly. As we’d noted, there was debate as to whether the figure of 415,000 subscribers mentioned in the Funcom quarterly report presentation referred to August 14th or June 30th, but in this interview Ellingson has now confirmed AoC‘s active subscriber numbers as over 400,000. Working from the figure of 800,000 boxes sold, that gives a clear retention figure of around 50% right now.

As well as talking at length about how good the launch was (yes, Erling, we know) Ellingson proceeds to reassure the audience that he and the other developers won’t be resting on their laurels. He’s obviously read the forums between giving these interviews, as two of the biggest issues are mentioned specifically: the PvP patch is due ‘any moment now, cross your fingers‘ and the memory leak (arguably the biggest issue of all as it impacts even those who love the game as it is) is getting plenty of attention. There’s also a flying mention of the new Funcom MMO, The Secret World.

Courtesy of German gaming site onlinewelten.com, we’re able to bring you a presentation of upcoming Age of Conan content by Erling Ellingson, straight from the Games Convention in Leipzig. The presentation takes us on a tour of the Tarantia Commons, a slum area in which your character takes a side in a war between street gangs, and stops to take in some of the new exotic armor sets that have been included in response to player demand. Quests are set to become more interesting and branching, allowing characters to make moral choices rather than simply go off on errands to kill ten of something.

The tour then checks out Black Castle, the mantis-infested stronghold in the south of Khopshef Province, which is ‘completely revamped‘ in the new version, the main focus being on Indiana Jones style traps that require ingenuity and co-operation to tackle. Ellingson explains that Age of Conan is deliberately borrowing from World of Warcraft in its reworking of boss fights, to produce encounters that require specific tactics to beat; we’re glad to hear it, as bosses right now are a bit too much of the bag-of-hit-points kind. Next stop is Ymir’s Pass, a Cimmerian zone under bandit onslaught, featuring one of the hugest bosses we’ve seen. We also hear about upcoming level 80 dungeons and the PvP consequence system.

One thing you’ll hear Ellingson say repeatedly is ‘we listened to our players‘. That seems to be the message Funcom is most keen to send out right now. Check out the video after the cut.

American readers: are you going to Dragon*Con this Labor Day weekend? Funcom (developer of Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, and The Secret World) is! Its specific plans have been laid out at the Age of Conan website.

The company will have its own booth, of course, which will be open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM Friday through Sunday, and from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday. More interestingly, though, Funcom will be hosting what it calls the “FunCon Event” in the Sheraton Capital Ballroom on Friday at 10:00 PM. The party will feature music by DJ Tarryk and visitors from the teams of all three Funcom projects.

The following day, Funcom will present its two currently-released games — Anarchy Online at 10:00 AM and Age of Conan at 7:00 PM. Somewhere amidst all these proceedings, fans will have the opportunity to win posters, inflatable swords, t-shirts, lanyards, custom PC cases, and “one special customized Anarchy Online PC.” That’s cool. It’s probably not cool enough to go out of your way to go to Dragon*Con for, but if you’re already gonna be there you might as well stop by. Sure it may be completely innocent, but it’s interesting nonetheless. According to a recent announcement, Funcom’s CEO Trond Aas has recently sold 400,000 shares of his company’s stock. The announcement also states that these shares were sold “primarily to cover Mr. Aas’ acquisition costs of the shares as well as accumulated wealth tax costs of the past six years as a result of the holdings in Funcom.” This 400,000 number represents only a fraction of the shares owned by the CEO.

While this Brighthub article tends to focus on the timing of the sale, pointing out that Age of Conan has already lost nearly half of its customers, no official connection has been made. However, the stock’s price has fallen quite dramatically lately, closing at $13.60 per share on August 22, 2008, which is down from $55.50 per share on Age of Conan’s release in May.

Update: This is a take on the Brighthub article more than anything, blaming AoC for everything, not to be confused with this original post. Plus, we get a look at the actual announcement about the stock sales itself. Sorry for any confusion of duplicates.

Age of Conan’s European site has published preliminary patch notes for the August 27th update. They have issued a caveat that these are subject to change and may not end up on the testbed server let alone live in the game.

# Shield of the Risen will now be given to new characters when they reach level 5.

# Female characters can now use the “pointdown” emote.
# The following emotes now work for both male and female characters:

CLASSES

# Empowered Repulse should also increase the length of the knockbacks by 1 meter for each point.
# Holy Conquest’s bonus holy damage on the Devotional Prayer spell will now properly affect teammates.

Ranger

# Fixed a bug where, if your current target went into hiding, you wouldn’t be able to target him again when he reappeared unless you’d targeted something else in the meantime.
# Combat transitions for all characters dual-wielding any combination of weapons should now be smoother.
# Female polearm users who double tap should see a correct animation.
# Charge can no longer be used on non-alive targets.
# All weapons should now work correctly with the combos available to that weapon type. (ex. Guardian combo Slaughter).
# Combo timers are now adjusted to not time out when the server lags.
# The female charge animation has been corrected to not throw the female backwards anymore.
